The Lake Neusiedl-Seewinkel National Park is one of the most important conservation areas for birds in Europe. More than 300 avian species live safely in the extensive protected area, which contains reed, brackish pond and marshy meadow habitats.

The steppe lake lies at the deepest point of the “Little Hungarian Plain” and has no rivers or streams feeding into it. The surface area of the lake encompasses about 320 km², 180 of which are reed belt.
The National Park was founded in 1993 and attracts thousands of visitors annually, in part due to the extensive network of paths and optimal infrastructure. The animal and birdlife can be observed in comfort from one of the viewing points.
The National Park Information Centre in Illmitz is open all year round. It is a point-of-call for all visitors, as well as hosting exhibitions and events. Here, one can organise excursions, exchange information and listen to talks and presentations.

The Lake Neusiedl region around the largest steppe lake in central Europe was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001, and joins the list of 850 or so cultural and natural landmarks. This region encompasses an area of 747km² , and includes parts of Austria and Hungary. The unique trans-border Lake Neusiedl-Seewinkel National Park, the Lake Neusiedl-Leitha Mountains Nature Area (an internationally recognised RAMSAR and NATURA-2000 area and a Biosphere Reserve), the Ruster Hügelland and the Leithaauen all belong to the unique natural landscape around Lake Neusiedl.
