The Lake Neusiedl region, the largest steppe lake in Central Europe, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001 and therefore counts as one of the 850 World Cultural and Natural Monuments.

This region has a total area of ​​approximately 747 km² on the Austrian and Hungarian sides. The unique cross-border National Park Lake Neusiedl, the Natural Park Lake Neusiedl Leitha Mountains - internationally acclaimed RAMSAR-, NATURA-2000 site and the Biosphere Reserve - the Ruster Hills and Leithaauen belong to this unique natural landscape around Lake Neusiedl.
